Origin of Games |
Back of card - 'Chess, once known as "Checker", takes it name from the Persian word -- Shah. The earliest authority on Chess is Masudi, an Arabic author who wrote about A.D. 950. According to him, Shatranj existed long before his time. The game originated amongst the Buddhists, whose religion was prevalent in India from the 3rd to the 9th centuries. This religion prohibits war and the slaughter of fellow-men, and chess was invented as a substitute for war. The game passed from the Hindus to the Persians, then to the Arabians and from then to Europe.'
